place that is steeped in history, but it’s also a place where everyone should
feel welcome. And that's why my husband and I have made it our mission to open
up the house to as many people as we can." – Michelle Obama

The
Oval Office
The
Oval Office is the official office of the President of the United States.
The
office was designed by the architect Nathan C. Wyeth at the order of President
William Howard Taft in 1909. Named for its distinctive oval shape, the
Oval Office is part of the complex of offices that make up the West Wing of the
White House. Badly damaged by a fire in 1929, the office was rebuilt byPresident
Herbert C. Hoover. In 1934, President
Franklin D. Roosevelt enlarged the West Wing and added today’s Oval
Office, designed by Eric Gugler.
The President uses the Oval Office as
his primary place of work. The President commonly chooses the Oval Office as
the backdrop for televised addresses to the nation, and countless foreign
leaders have traveled to the office to meet with the President.
The Vice President's
Ceremonial Office
In addition to the Vice President's
Office in the West Wing, the Vice President and his staff maintain a set of
offices in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB), located next to the
West Wing on the White House premises. This office, called the Vice President's
Ceremonial Office, served as the Navy Secretary's Office when the EEOB housed
the State, Navy and War Departments. Today, the Vice President uses the office
for meetings and press interviews.
Eisenhower Executive
Office Building
The Eisenhower Executive Office
Building is located next to the West Wing, and houses a majority of offices for
White House staff. Originally built for the State, War and Navy Departments
between 1871 and 1888, the EEOB is an impressive building that commands a
unique position in both our national history and architectural heritage.
Designed by Supervising Architect of
the Treasury Alfred Mullett, the granite, slate and cast iron exterior makes
the EEOB one of America's best examples of the French Second Empire style of
architecture. It took 17 years for Mullett's masterpiece to finally be
completed.
Air Force One
No
matter where in the world the President travels, if he flies in an Air Force
jet, the plane is called Air Force One. Technically, Air Force One is the call
sign of any Air Force aircraft carrying the President. In practice, however,
Air Force One is used to refer to one of two highly customized Boeing 747-200B
series aircraft, which carry the tail codes 28000 and 29000. The Air Force
designation for the aircraft is VC-25A.
Air Force One is one of the most
recognizable symbols of the presidency, spawning countless references not just
in American culture but across the world. Emblazoned with the words
"United States of America," the American flag, and the Seal of the
President of the United States, it is an undeniable presence wherever it flies.
Inside, the President and his travel
companions enjoy 4,000 square feet of floor space on three levels, including an
extensive suite for the President that features a large office, lavatory, and
conference room. Air Force One includes a medical suite that can function as an
operating room, and a doctor is permanently on board. The plane’s two food
preparation galleys can feed 100 people at a time.
White House Fellows
Founded in 1964, the White House
Fellows program is one of America's most prestigious programs for leadership
and public service. White House Fellowships offer exceptional young men and
women first-hand experience working at the highest levels of the federal
government.
It is essential to the healthy
functioning of our system that we have in the non-governmental sector a
generous supply of leaders who have an understanding -- gained first hand -- of
the challenges that our national government faces. In a day when the individual
feels increasingly remote from the centers of power and decision, such leaders
can help their fellow citizens comprehend the process by which the Nation is
governed.
The White House Fellows Program is
designed to give superbly qualified young Americans precisely those
experiences.
